Experiencias Diferentes

I'd like to begin by saying that everybody in the class should know that I am from Michigan (Eastern Time zone), and thus I am shaped by my history there (and other places I have lived), so any comments I make in class should be taken in the light of "she doesn't know New Mexico until she hears it from us nuevomexicanos."

However, speaking of different experience, I have still dealt with and learned about and experienced major social issues... a different way.  Where I am from, people are really worried about equality, and when I say equality, I mean the kind in politics- everybody gets the same thing.  So, talking about having separate schools in Spanish and English is segregation which is a huge no-no, due to previous segregation issues with blacks and whites.  So, what I was saying by the emotional issues are different where I am from than in NM, I mean that to have Spanish immersion instruction for some usually means that it must be offered to everyone.

Unfortunately, most of the 'native' languages in the Eastern US have disappeared in public contexts in large numbers, which does not seem as much in the West, I mean both the languages of the Native Americans and the Dutch, German, and Hungarian (from my experience) etc. that is only confined to the home, that only the abuelitos speak. (BTW, there are many abuelitos who still speak these languages exclusively and some nietos can understand and speak a little and some can't).

However, more and more people are speaking and learning specifically Spanish in the East because of the Utilitarian Reason, like I said, because when I was young I was told "If you don't learn Spanish, you won't be able to compete in the new millennium."  The Spanish program got so big at my high school that now k-12 is taught in both languages, 50/50.

What I think UnitedStatesians need to accept (because Spanish is growing in popularity among non-hispanics of all races and ethnicities) is not only that Spanish and English separately will eventually both probably be spoken by the majority (not speaking of race), but that Spanglish and code-switching will probably be the official language of the US in 100 years or less.

Languages will always evolve as people do, they mix as people mix.

No hablan bien ni el español ni el ingés...

Fui la otra noche a apoyar una cause muy buena de una beca para estudiantes latinos y nativos en las humanidades al nivel PhD. Uno de los grandes patrocinadores de la beca había llegado para dar una charla. Como buen político, fui a presentarme...

Al preguntarme sobre el programa de SHL me dijo que era bueno tener un programa para ayudarles a los estudiantes que venían de comunidades bilingües por que tenía la impresión que no hablaban bien ni el inglés ni el español.

REALLY?!?!?!

Con calma le expliqué que cada variedad del español cumplía a la perfección las necesidades comunicativas de la gente que la usaba y que eso de mezclar era una destreza que no era posible sin una alta nivel de bilingüismo.

Pero me sorprendió mucho tener que enfrentarme con ese estereotipo en tal evento. De hecho, es una de las cosas que pasa con esta clase--observamos en nuestro alrededor las cosas que salen en las lecturas.

Después de leer el articulo de Sánchez empecé a buscar un anuncio de cartelera que había visto hace unas semanas durante mi primer viaje a Los Ángeles. El anunció me impresionó porque se dirigía, sin duda, a las personas bilingües que manejan los dos idiomas con fluidez.  Yo me emocioné al ver el anuncio, porque en pocas ciudades se ve algo así, y intenté explicar lo que quería decir a mi novio Ohiano, quien solo se quedó aburrido. :)

No he podido encontrar el anuncio por internet pero encontré uno parecido, uno que salió por la televisión en 2006 y por casualidad es de la misma compañía; Toyota.  Cuando salió recibió mucha atención. Algunas personas se enojaban mucho que un anuncio ASI puede haber salido durante THE SUPER BOWL, (i.e. el evento mas importante del año para los estadounidenses!)  Oops!  Si quieren saber de las cosas malas que la gente ha dicho pueden ir a los foros....

Pues no quiero señalar el prejuicio y racismo como mi punto principal, auque sea un punto importante. Quería que miraran el anuncio y pensaran en que fragmento de la sociedad está dirigido según la lectura de Sánchez.  Una cosa que yo noto es el uso de ingles en el espacio familiar.

Hola Gente!!!

Voy a poner la primera entrada. Quisiera decirles que me han gustado las primeras clases con Uds! Hay mucho que comentar que no siempre vamos a poder durante la hora del clase. Todos comentarios están bienvenidos siempre que muestren respeto y consideración para nuestra comunidad de aprendizaje.
